She related how it had decimated animal populations, poisoned farmers, and destroyed industries such as bee-keeping #A 1992 survey of 22 distinguished Americans revealed that Silent Spring was the book they thought had most profoundly affected mankind in the past 50 years#DDT was the main component of Agent Orange, the horrific chemical weapon used by the Americans in the Vietnam War#The use of DDT as an insecticide has been largely abandoned worldwide#For many years agent orange was used in Soviet Central Asia to kill the leaves on the cotton crop so it could be harvested. The deadly chemical was carried on the wind as far away as the Baltic States, where traces have been found in butter and milk
